Adult day care programs are designed to provide senior individuals access to a wide variety of activities that keep them physically, mentally, and socially active. The centers often offer nutritious meal services, games and discussion groups, outings, and special holiday celebrations. Other day-to-day activities include art, musical entertainment, and gentle exercise.

A recent study found more than 5,600 adult day care facilities exist in the United States, a number which showed a considerable increase from the year before. The study, which explored many different aspects of the mature adult lifestyle, offered additional information on adult day programs that would be of use to companies and individuals managing related programs, such as the fact that more than half the attendees of these facilities are women and that the vast majority of current programs offer memory training and cognitive stimulation activities.

Though the number of centers seems to be increasing, more than one-quarter of facilities have waiting lists. This suggests a need for more adult day care programming for the aging American population and encourages the development of new programs around the country.
